After the refreshing and heartwarming 90’s web series, expectations were naturally high for director Aditya Hasan’s next outing. One would expect another pleasant film filled with relatable emotions and sensible writing. Unfortunately, this film turns out to be a major disappointment👎
The movie actually starts on a decent note👍The first 20 minutes involving the family portions are good, carrying a natural and pleasant feel👍. Even in the second half, there are two phone-call conversations that work emotionally and remind us of the director’s ability to handle simple emotions well👍Sadly, apart from these few moments, there is hardly anything that keeps us invested👎
The biggest problem is the film’s over-preachy approach👎👎. Aditya Hasan’s intention is understandable, and the topics he wants to discuss are definitely relevant. The film tries to explore relationships beyond physical attraction while also touching upon subjects like periods, PCOD and the realities women go through. There is nothing wrong with the thought, but cinema needs to communicate such ideas naturally rather than constantly preach them to the audience👎. Here, the messaging becomes so excessive that it eventually backfires👎
The screenplay is reasonably decent in the first half, but the second half becomes painfully boring👎The entire UK episode lacks the sensibility and emotional depth needed for this kind of story. Instead of making us connect with the characters, several portions leave us completely detached from their journey👎
Anand Deverakonda gives a decent performance👍and does what is required of him. Vaishnavi Chaitanya, however, is disappointing here👎. Her makeover doesn’t suit her particularly well, and more importantly, the lead pair lacks convincing chemistry. They don’t complement each other well on screen, which becomes another major reason why the central relationship fails to connect emotionally👎
Hesham Abdul Wahab’s music is pretty average👍and doesn’t leave much of an impact. On the technical side, the production values are good👍as expected from the Sithara banner, and the film looks polished.
But ultimately, the biggest disappointment is director Aditya Hasan himself👎👎. After 90’s, expectations from his writing and emotional handling were much higher. His core idea has potential, and his intention to discuss the other side of relationships, periods, PCOD and women’s experiences deserves appreciation. But good intentions alone cannot make a good film👎. The presentation lacks subtlety, the emotions don’t land strongly enough, and the excessive preaching completely dilutes the impact👎
Overall, a disappointing outing from Aditya Hasan and team.👎👎
